Village Green Concert Hits a High Note

By Jenn Taylor, CRPD Recreation Coordinator

Families brought their blankets, favorite dinner picnic foods and dancing shoes for a great night out at the recent concert in Village Green Park. The Nicole Hodson Quartet performed during the Village Green’s inaugural concert sponsored by Cordova Recreation & Park District and Procida Landscape. With Nicole’s sultry voice, husband Tim’s gifted drumming, John’s tantalizing keyboards, and a host of outstanding jazz musicians, this group dazzled audiences at the Village Green Park in Rancho Cordova. Families commented on the fun atmosphere and welcoming environment with one couple celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary at the event stating, “I have been to music in the park events for many years and have never had such a lovely time.” This was truly an intergenerational affair with many families and extended families present sharing picnic dinners and listening to great music.

The new community of Capital Village is a mixed-use urban community in the new City of Rancho Cordova. The innovative community emphasizes neighborhood connection and walkability and would be a great location for a neighborhood market. The suggested location is located off of Capital Village Drive near the intersection of Zinfandel Drive and Data Drive. Underwear Drive

Hello neighbors,

I am writing to solicit underwear donations. I admit it, my first reaction was to laugh, and it really would be funny if the need was not so real.

Did you know that the Folsom Cordova Unified School District had 680 documented cases of “homeless” students last year? For those students, Project 680 was born.

Project 680 is a grassroots team effort led by local residents to do something about the problem of student homelessness. This all started with a sock drive in December 2008. After learning of the “680 from the District Liaison for Homeless Services, and that having new socks were a felt need among these students, it became our goal to collect 680 pairs of socks. Well, the Project 680 team was overwhelmed with generosity from the community as 3,144 pairs of socks came in. Local residents, neighborhoods, organizations, churches, and businesses all teamed up to make this happen.

The current mission is to collect underwear for these students. So many people generously give clothes, coats, etc., but the basics like socks and underwear are often overlooked. This is such a simple way to help people who really need it.

Here are the real (but admittedly chuckle-worthy) particulars about what is needed:

Only new undergarments in sealed packages will be accepted.

  • Elementary Boys and Girls:
Sizes 4-10 (standard underwear), full briefs for older elementary
  • Middle School and High School students:
Boys generally prefer boxers and could use a range of sizes from Boys 10-12 through Mens XL.

Girls generally prefer a modest bikini brief. Thongs are inappropriate for this project.

Sizes from Girls 12 to a range of teen sizes would be most useful.

Donations will be accepted until May 8, 2009.

Collection Points have been set up at the following locations:

Cordova Neighborhood Church: Church Office at 10600 Coloma Road Rancho Cordova

Cordova Gardens Area: Penrose household at 2301 Dawes Street Rancho Cordova

Cordova Meadows Area: Bellamy household at 10118 La Alegria Drive Rancho Cordova

Folsom: Girl Scout Troop 24 c/o the Scott Family, 765 Densmore Court, Folsom

Rancho Cordova City Hall: 2729 Prospect Park Drive Rancho Cordova

RC Neighborhood Center: 10665 Coloma Road, Suite 100 Rancho Cordova

Sunriver Neighborhood: 11121 Crooken River Ct., Rancho Cordova

White Rock Area: Jeppesen Household at 3239 Portsmouth Drive Rancho Cordova

White Rock Area: Wiese household at 3065 Swansea Way Rancho Cordova

White Rock Area: Tartaglia household at 3035 Stoke Ct Rancho Cordova

If you can help by offering another collection location, please contact Ryan Lundquist at (916) 595-3735 or ryan@cordovatowne.com.

For more information about Project 680 and the Underwear Drive, please visit their website at www.project680.org.

Thanks in advance for your generosity and for spreading the word about this very worthy cause.

Beazer Finishes 2008 as Region's Top-Selling Builder - Credits Capital Village

Atlanta-based Beazer Homes finished 2008 as the region's top-selling builder, outpacing Texas builders Centex Homes, which ranked first in 2007, and D.R. Horton, which led the region in 2006.

Beazer's 432 sales represented nearly one in every 10 homes sold in 2008. Beazer was also one of the few firms to beat its 2007 numbers. Last year, it had 386 sales. Arizona-based Taylor Morrison Homes also bettered its 2007 performance. It sold 259 homes last year, eight more than in 2007, statistics show.

Michael Penbera, Beazer's Sacramento division sales manager, attributed the rise to prices beginning at $179,900 in Rancho Cordova's Capital Village and even lower at its Natomas Field project north of downtown Sacramento.

Penbera acknowledged that many buyers come to model homes to compare against foreclosure prices. But he said, "There's some peace in purchasing a new home with a warranty, with a lot of the energy-efficient features that older ones aren't required to have."

Rancho Cordova, indeed, was the only part of the region to see higher fourth-quarter sales in 2008 than 2007.
